The subject matter of this photograph is water. However since there is no visual reference to anything else in reality, it can immediately be viewed as a study of pure form. Since we are simply asked to consider the beauty of this image it would be placed in Barrett’s aesthetically evaluative category. Three lines are evident in the image. The dark diagonal line is the most obvious but there are two other, fainter lines above and below the main line. All three lines are on a diagonal which creates a sense of movement and energy in the photo. The visual surface is very densely textured with many short, broken lines and curvilinear shapes that swirl and move giving a painterly quality to the image. While the blue color would normally produce a calming feeling, the bold, diagonal dark line and the numerous smaller broken lines and shapes contribute to an agitated feeling.
